Technical and Conceptual Scientific Art and Design
As a visual science communicator, I use design principles to tell your research story more clearly. Because of my own background in science, I am able to listen and understand your research in detail, identify your central finding and make sure everything in the design supports and highlights it.
Jen Cook-Chrysos
Freelance Visual Scientific Communicator
I began my career with a BS in Biology from the University of Michigan and worked my first job as a laboratory technician at Boston University School of Medicine. I later worked at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, helping scientists to learn graphics software and teach workshops on how to make scientific figures using Illustrator and Photoshop.
Whitehead helped me go back to school to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Communication Design: Illustration) at Massachusetts College of Art. Now I contract for Whitehead Institute, MIT Deptartment of Biology, and have worked with many educators from high school to universities, as well as biotech companies.
Because of my professional training in science, design and illustration, I am uniquely positioned to help scientists, scientific institutions, and educators to communicate science visually.
Scientific Figures and Graphical Abstracts
Design principles such as alignment, consistency, clarity, space, symmetry, typography and color theory, can make your most detailed diagram provide a clear path for your reader to follow, making sure the centerpiece of your work remains at the center.

Conceptual Illustration
Conceptual or editorial illustration helps scientists and non-scientists alike identify with the importance of the research you are doing by making it relatable with metaphor and humor. Take a look at some examples I have done for communications departments and directly with researchers.
Submitting a Journal Cover Design?
This is a wonderful opportunity; I can help create beautiful art depicting your research.
Scientific Design and Collateral
In addition to Illustration, I do all kinds of design including posters and postcards, event programs, signage, web headers, and logos. Take a look at some things I have done for small groups and large institutions.
Infographics
I have been working on a series of public health infographics. I would love to parter with a medical professional to create and distribute more of these.
